So I was reminded recently of an intriguing obscurity from my pediatric cancer days. Amidst the tears and fear there were several incredibly entertaining moments from nurses, doctors and family members. Some days all you can do is laugh about a situation. I was reminded of a specific one recently when a good friend of mine found out he had kidney stones. I was visiting him after surgery and they wouldn't let him go until he passed urine. His mother began singing "splish splash." I literally laughed out loud as a hidden memory came back to me. Shortly after my surgery to remove the tumor from my right temporal lobe I awoke to my sisters surrounding my bed in the ICU. A small side note, catheters aren't much fun. Regardless, my nurse, an angel- related to the discomfort and said that if I felt like I could go on my own he would remove the catheter. My sisters, both cheerleaders in their high school days, began singing an old sunday school song. In all their glory they bellowed " DEEP AND WIDE---DEEP AND WIDE---THERE'S A FOUNTAIN FLOWING DEEP AND WIDE "
It reminded me there were a lot of LOL moments even amongst the darkness. I was curious to know if any one else has any memories and moments to relate.?

Okay, I will preface this by acknowledging that Nathan will probably not be humored with me sharing this story in public. But, it was pretty funny at the time. (Also, reader discretion advised...some content may not be suitable for young viewers.) During Nathan's visit to ICU the days were long and the nights were even longer. Had it not been for the terrific nursing staff, we would have all lost our minds during that time. Some caring family members visited delivering a bag of Hershey's HUGS. Who can't use a few hugs when their in the hospital? In our search to find a "candy Jar" to place the contents of the opened candy bag, our evening nurse fetched a urinal. Who would have known that a urinal could have so many valuable uses? They truly are very functional creations! After he placed the chocolate hugs inside the urinal, he went in search of a sharpie marker. When he returned, the urinal now announced... "When your pissed off, help yourself to a hug!" If nursing staff only knew the full impact of blessings they bestow upon their patients, one of the biggest being humor in the hardest of situations. Thank God for humor to help us keep sanity!!
